Delaware 2010 Dog Licensing and Kennel Licensing

Dog Licenses

As of January 1, 2010, dog licensing in the State of Delaware will no longer be administered by the State.  Residents of New Castle County will need to obtain dog licenses from the county with the exception of residents of the City of Wilmington.  Wilmington residents will continue to purchase their dog licenses from the City.

Individual Dog License Requirements

  • Licenses are issued for each calendar year beginning January 1 and ending December 31.
  • All dogs 6 months of age or older as of Jan 1 of a given calendar year must be licensed for that year.
  • State law allows a 60 day grace period for obtaining a license which means that all licenses must be obtained by March 1st.
  • Each dog being licensed must have a current rabies vaccination at the time the license is issued.

Check Purchases

You can complete and mail-in the following application along with a check or money order, a copy of your dog's current rabies vaccination certificate, and if applicable, proof of spay/neuter to:

Fees

1 year spayed or neutered dog - $10
1 year unspayed or non-neutered dog - $15
3 year spayed or neutered dog - $30
3 year unspayed or non-neutered dog - $45

Enforcement

Animal control is still the statewide responsibility of the Kent County SPCA.  ALL animal control issues in ALL counties is under the authority and enforcement of Delaware Animal Control (DEACC) officers & the KCSPCA.



Kennel Licenses - New Castle County

Any person who maintains a kennel wherein more than 4 dogs are kept for show, trial, sale, breeding or other purposes may purchase a kennel license instead of individual dog owner licenses for each dog. Kennel licenses are purchased for each calendar year.

How to Obtain a Kennel License

Kennel license applications for ALL counties can be picked up in person at the Kent County    Applicants should complete the application and return to the KCSPCA and an inspection appointment will be scheduled.

Current kennel license holders will be receiving information and applications in the mail.
 
Once your Kennel has passed inspection with Kent SPCA, Please send in a copy of the approved inspection report and a check for the license to New Castle County Government Center, Office of Finance c/o Mike Kapa, 87 Reads Way, New Castle DE 19720. We will not be accepting any walk-ins. If you have any questions please call Mike Kapa at (302) 395-5169.

Fees

• Kennels operating with no more than twelve (12) dogs: $85.00
• Kennels operating with no more than twenty-five (25) dogs: $200.00
• Kennels operating with no more than fifty (50) dogs: $350.00
• Kennels operating with fifty (50) or more: $550.00
 
Kennel licenses purchased after March 1st of each calendar year shall be assessed an additional $35.00 reinstatement fee.
 
Kennel licenses that have been suspended shall be assessed an additional reinstatement fee of $50.00
